Greenway Golf believes that golf courses should be sustainable open spaces for everyone. Sustainability that ensures inclusive, long-term viability is multi-faceted: ecological, social and financial. Large carbon footprints, single- purpose land use and significant barriers to entry, both cultural and economic, pose challenges for embracing today’s most pressing issues. Corica Park, Greenway’s flagship property, is testament to our efforts to model how golf courses can be redesigned and successfully operated as places for flora, fauna and people to flourish.
Ecological stewardship is central to Greenway’s ethos. Regenerating the natural environment honors the traditions of the game by preserving open recreational space for current and future generations. A complete course renovation has transformed the formerly degraded landscape at Corica Park into a vibrant ecosystem. Newly created natural habitats are sanctuaries for plankton, fish, pollinating butterflies and a dozen species of birds, most of which arrived after Greenway’s complete overhaul of the 300 acres. Intricate micro-irrigation networks, comprehensive water capture and recycle systems and a unique sand and drought-tolerant turf combination have significantly reduced net water usage. Recent experiments with biochar are also dramatically reducing chemical inputs, and Corica Park’s newest course, the North Course, is largely pesticide-free. Greenway leverages golf and golf course space as vehicles for change. Our goal is for the sport we love to culturally and socio-economically reflect today’s world. We are also reimagining land use beyond golf for meaningful benefit. Corica Park’s “On The Green” Initiative seeks to integrate golf courses into the wider community by removing hurdles that limit access and opening doors to opportunities that the sport and the space can nurture. Learn more about our equity-focused pillars here. Examples of our creative programming and land use diversification efforts include On The Green Golf & Play Summer Camp, offered at no cost, with food and transportation included to underserved East Bay youth. We also provide free golf after school for all youth 18 and under on all three courses, a free golf league open to all Alameda middle school students and free practice access for high school and college golf teams. Nonprofits, educational institutions and local small businesses have access to complimentary space use for fundraisers, meetings and team-building events.
Our three golf courses are suitable for players of all skill levels. Fast greens and swirling winds challenge seasoned golfers, while wide fairways and rolling hills welcome those newer to the game. The 18-hole South Course and the 9-hole Mif Albright Par-3 Course are design and sustainability award winners. The highly anticipated front nine holes of the North Course are also open for play. Upon completion, the 45-hole complex will be among the largest golf facilities in California.
"A number of cities have found innovative ways to recapture the promise and optimism of municipal golf, offering new prospects for the game in the public sphere. Just across the bay from Sharp Park, the city of Alameda...outsourced the operating contract to Greenway Golf."
Corica Park's South Course ranked #12 municipal golf course in nation and #2 in California by Golf Magazine raters.
Fast-running fairways, run-up ramps into low-slung greens, artfully configured bunkers and wispy native fescue grasses grace the layout. Corica Park is easily walkable, full of options, and golfers have flocked from near and far to try it out since its late June opening.
Less widely advertised is that Corica also has a fully transformed par-3 course, which is also firm and fast, has rollicking greens and is as fun for beginners as it is challenging for serious sticks.
It’s all interwoven. The grassing plan wouldn’t be possible without the irrigation, which wouldn’t be possible without the water-harvesting system. "None of this would have been possible," Cook says, "without Greenway Golf and its vision."
